News Menu Button Hayley Westenra to join DSO on Mother's Day

Just 17 years old, she burst on the classical music scene with a debut album that went triple platinum on European charts and thrilled U.S. audiences with appearances on Good Morning America, international singing sensation Haley Westenra joins the DSO for a very special Mother’s Day concert to sing highlights from her debut CD, Pure, featuring an eclectic mix of music by Schubert, Gunoud and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

A teacher discovered her perfect pitch when Hayley Westenra was six years old and singing in a school play. Piano, violin and recorder lessons followed, as did performances in musical theater and "busking" on the streets of her hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand, with younger sister Sophie. The coins earned from the sidewalk hustle helped pay for a self-recorded demo at age 12, which led to an album at 14 and a Christmas CD soon after.

Her third album, Pure, is the first album by a New Zealander to be certified 10x platinum in New Zealand and holds the record for the most weeks spent at #1 for a New Zealand artist. Pure made history by becoming the best selling debut album in the history of the UK Classical album charts. The album has been certified double platinum in the UK, platinum in Australia, and has so far sold 1.2 million copies worldwide. It was released in the United States in April, 2004.

Like Josh Groban and Charlotte Church -- more classic than classical -- Westenra's sweet, soaring melodies include a mix of pop-styled arias and folk; she also does a cover of Kate Bush's hit "Wuthering Heights."
